© Reuters. Tesla (TSLA) reverses price cut on Model Y variant in China
According to a local website, Tesla (NASDAQ:), on Friday, increased the cost of its Model Y Performance sport-utility vehicle in China by approximately $2,000, undoing a price cut put into effect back in August.
The top-tier version of the electric SUV now has a price tag of 363,900 yuan ($49,740), a climb from its previous 349,900 yuan. Tesla had previously reduced the price from 363,900 yuan to 349,900 yuan two months ago.
Meanwhile, the prices for the long-range and rear-wheel Model Ys remained unaffected.
Earlier this month, in an effort to capture a larger portion of the world’s largest electric vehicle market, Tesla upgraded certain features of the Model Y in China. Additionally, the company introduced improvements to its Model 3 sedan in September, including extended range.
With signs of slowing demand, electric vehicle manufacturers in China have intermittently engaged in a price battle over the past year, initially instigated by Tesla. However, the U.S. carmaker has also periodically raised prices.
Tesla also recently increased the price of its Model Y Long Range all-wheel-drive electric vehicle by $500 in the United States. The EV is now priced at $48,990, up from $48,490.
Shares of TSLA are up 1.72% in pre-market trading Frida morning.
